Kaivauksilla avattiin uusi koeoja, josta löytyi muutama pieni kvartsi-iskos.

Day 3

Fortunately, not all those who had booked made an appearance and the final number of participants was eight, because people had other engagements.

In the morning, it seemed like it would rain so we put a tent over the recently opened trial trench. The putting together of the tent was not exactly easy. (pipe one to pipe two, connect three to four and four to three...) The pieces had problems in staying together, but we still got it bolted into the ground in various ways and even though the day was windy, the tent didn't fly away, which is a good thing.

At the end of the day the diggers found burned bones and other signs of habitation in the trial trench and in another trench farther on. The archeologists confirmed that we were at a Stone Aged dwelling place, which has been known for quite some time now.

Quartz Splinter

Päivä 3

Edellisenä päivänä meitä uhkailtiin n. 20 ihmisellä, mutta onneksi lukumäärä olikin se tavallinen kahdeksan, vaikka variaatioita tapahtui, kun jotkin eivät päässeet ja toiset astuivat heidän tilalleen.

Aamulla tuntui siltä kuin päivällä sataisi, joten juuri avatun koeojan ylle laitettiin puutarhateltta, jonka pystyttäminen oli melkoinen seikkailu. (ykkönen kakkoseen, kolmonen neloseen ja nelonen kolmoseen jne.) Osat eivät meinanneet oikein pysyä yhdessä. Lopulta teltta oli tasaisesti paikallaan, eikä se tuulisesta päivästä huolimatta lentänyt pois tai hajonnut, joka on erittäin hyvä asia.

Koeojasta löytyi päivän loppupuolella palaneita luita ja muita ruuantähteitä ja toisesta kuopasta löydettiin vanhan nuotiopaikan merkkejä. Arkeologit totesivat, että me todella olimme kivikautisella asuinpaikalla,kun palaneet luut oli löydetty.

Day 2

Today the most enthusiastic diggers arrived already at 8 am which made us, the organizers, arriving closer to ten feel extremely late.


The first holes were covered before lunch, because they had been dug deep enough. During the day some people saw the signs that were marking the way to the site and some people decided to drop by to see what was happening.

Also a reporter from a local newspaper came by to write a story on the dig. While the reporter was at the site there were only two findings, but near the end of the day there were eight artifacts found: several quartz splinters and an unindentified metal object.

Later in the day the dig shifted to the farthest end of the yard and to the other end, which is a hill. Unfortunately, the hill is behind the photographers back. From this dig in the picture on the left, a trail of plough was found. Also, Stone Age layer of soil was found fairly close to the hill.

Päivä 2

Tänään innokkaimmat kaivajat ilmestyivät jo klo 8.00 aamulla kaksi tuntia ennen varsinaista alkamisaikaa. Me järjestäjät tulimme sinne lähemmäs kello kymmentä, joten meistä tuntui siltä kuin olisimme ollut varsinaisen myöhässä.

Ensimmäiset reiät peitettiin jo ennen lounasta, kun niitä kaivettiin niin syvälle kuin oli aiheellista. Paikalle tuli päivän aikana muutama utelias katsomaan, että mitä arkeologiset yleisökaivaukset oikein merkitsivät. Ohiajavat näkivät kyltit ja kun ei suurempaa kiirettä joillakin ole, he uhrasivat hieman aikaansa tyydyttääkseen tiedonjanonsa.

Paikalle eksyi myös paikallislehden toimittaja tekemään juttua ja ottamaan kuvia. Toimittajan ollessa paikalla löytöjä oli vain kaksi, mutta päivän kuluessa löytyi yhteensä kahdeksan esinettä, useimmat kvartsi-iskoksia ja jokin metalliesine.

Myöhemmin päivällä kaivaukset siirtyivät pihan syrjäisempään kulmaan ja alavalle mäelle, joka on kuvan ottajan selän takana. Tältä kaivaukselta löytyi auran ura ja juuri aloitetulla kaivauksella alavalla pihalla löytyi melko pinnalta kivikautisen ajan maanpintaa.

First Day of Stone Age Dig

Diggers showed up already before 10 o'clock

The archeological dig begun today in Kisko. Diggers started showing up already half an hour before the official beginning time which was at ten o'clock. The beginning was a bit of a mess, but soon the enthusiastic amateur archeologists were well on their way with digging the spots assigned to them. Because the day was so early coffee and other drinks were served.

Around midday after eating lunch the first archeological findings were done. They were small pieces of rock called quartz splinters that broke away from the quartz when it was being shaped into an item. In Finland quartz splinters are an important  way to find ancient habitations of humans from the Stone Age. Here is a picture of the most interesting quartz splinter that was found by an ambitious archeological hobbyist.

Around the end of the day the digs were about ten centimeters deep. In this picture one of the archeologists Miia Listenmaa is making notes while the diggers continue their work diligently until three o'clock. The other two professional archeologist were leading archeologist Jouko Pukkila and assisting Mikko Helminen. The days spoils were several shards from the Stone Aged human habitation.

Ensimmäinen päivä

Kaivaukset alkoivat jo ennen kello kymmentä.

Arkeologiset kaivaukset alkoivat tänään Kiskossa. Aamulla ennen varsinaista alkamisaikaa eli n. klo 9:30 innokkaita kaivajia alkoi jo ilmestyä. Alku oli pientä järjestelemistä, mutta pian kaivauksissa päästiin jo hyvään vauhtiin. Koska päivä oli niin aikainen tarjottiin kaivajille heti kahvia ja muuta juotavaa.

Noin puolen päivän aikaan syötiin keittoa ja löydettiin ensimmäiset kivikautiset jäännökset: kvartsi-iskokset, joita käytettiin aikoinaan esim. puun vuolemiseen. Kuvassa kaikista kiinnostavin löydetty kvartsi-iskos, jonka löysi innokas arkeologian harrastaja.Päivän loppupuolella oli jo päästy noin kymmenen senttimetrin syvyyteen. Tässä kuvassa avustava arkeologi Miia Listenmaa tekee merkintöjä lehtiöönsä, kun kaivajat jatkavat työtään ahkerasti klo 15 saakka. Kaksi muuta arkeologia olivat johtava arkeologi Jouko Pukkila ja avustava Mikko Helminen. Päivän saaliina olivat monet, ensimmäiset löydöt kivikautisen asuinpaikan jäänteistä.
